The Love of God Through Faith and Obedience
We hear it all the time: “God loves you.” But what does that really mean? Is it just a nice saying, or does it actually change the way we live?
God’s love is more than just words. It’s not something we only talk about on Sundays—it’s something that takes root in our everyday lives. His love shapes how we respond in traffic, how we forgive our family, how we speak to coworkers, and how we handle stress.
And here’s the key: we experience God’s love most deeply when we live by faith and walk in obedience to Him.
Faith Without Works Is Dead
James puts it simply:
"Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." — James 2:17
Faith isn’t just saying we believe—it’s trusting God enough to act on it. Imagine telling someone, “I’ve got your back,” but never actually showing up for them. That wouldn’t feel like real love. In the same way, if our faith never shows up in our choices, it’s empty.
Faith becomes real in the small things—like praying for a friend, choosing patience when your kids are testing you, or holding your tongue instead of snapping back. Faith isn’t just believing in God; it’s obeying Him even when it costs us something.
Works Are the Fruit of Love
Paul explains it like this:
"The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." — Galatians 5:6
When our faith is alive, it naturally shows up as love. Love isn’t just a warm feeling—it’s action. It’s paying for a stranger’s coffee, sending an encouraging text, forgiving someone who doesn’t deserve it, or serving when it’s inconvenient.
And here’s the good news—we don’t do it alone.
"God’s love has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit." — Romans 5:5
The Holy Spirit fills us with God’s love, giving us strength to keep loving when we’d rather quit.
Love Is Obedience to God
The Bible is clear:
"For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments." — 1 John 5:3
And Jesus Himself said:
"If you love Me, keep My commandments." — John 14:15
Obedience can sound strict, but it’s actually freeing. Obedience means trusting God’s way is better than our way. It might look like telling the truth even when lying would be easier, letting go of toxic habits, or forgiving someone who has deeply hurt you.
And we’re not left to figure it out alone:
"The Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you." — John 14:26
Obedience flows out of love. We obey not because we’re forced to, but because we love the One who loved us first.
💠 Love Reveals If We Really Know God
Scripture says:
"He who does not love does not know God, for God is love." — 1 John 4:8
If we claim to know God but refuse to love others, we’re fooling ourselves. Real love is evidence of a real relationship with Him.
That doesn’t mean we won’t ever get irritated or angry. We will. But over time, faith and obedience shape our hearts. So when your sibling gets under your skin, or your coworker disrespects you, or a driver cuts you off—you’ll notice you have a new choice: to respond with love instead of anger.
That’s God’s love at work in you.
Love Flows From a New Heart
We can’t manufacture this kind of love by trying harder. It comes from being born again.
"Love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again…" — 1 Peter 1:22–23
When we put our faith in Jesus, His Spirit changes us. Suddenly, things like patience, forgiveness, and kindness start to matter in ways they didn’t before. Faith makes us new, and obedience becomes a natural response.
Love in Action
Love isn’t complicated—it’s lived out in everyday choices:
Smiling at the tired cashier.
Being patient with your kids instead of snapping.
Helping your friend move, even when you’d rather rest.
Choosing not to gossip when everyone else is.
"Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." — 1 John 3:18
This is love in action—faith that obeys and shows itself through real life. And the Spirit helps us grow in it:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." — Galatians 5:22–23
Living in God’s Love
God’s love is not a theory—it’s a way of life. It shows up in faith that acts and obedience that trusts.
Faith without works is dead.
Works are acts of love.
Love is obedience to God.
And obedience flows from faith in Him.
Jesus said:
"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." — John 13:35
So whether you’re at work, stuck in traffic, wrangling kids, or standing in line at the grocery store—this is where God’s love shows up. Faith and obedience make His love visible in the everyday.
Prayer Together
Father,
Thank You for showing me what real love looks like through Jesus. Sometimes I forget that Your love is more than just words—it’s a love that calls me to live differently.
Help me to live out my faith in real ways every day. When I say I believe, let it show in how I act. Teach me to obey You, not out of fear, but out of love. Give me the courage to choose honesty, forgiveness, and kindness—even when it’s hard.
Holy Spirit, fill me with Your fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Remind me that even the smallest acts of faith and obedience—smiling at a stranger, forgiving someone who hurt me, or helping a neighbor—can reflect Your love to the world.
Make my life a reflection of Your love, Lord, so that others may see You through me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
